Food Photograph Cliches

June 12, 2019

One of the best things about this food photography is the colluding cliches of past and present.

In the Gen z corner is the much loved and Instagram favourite the avocado, neatly positioned on top of a slice of sour dough bread.

While the 80’s throwback is your parents and grandparent’s favourite dinner party starter, the prawn cocktail.

This combination of three ingredients is actually pretty tasty. But from a photographer’s point of view it’s got that little extra kick – the colours.

The Colours

The green and the avocado and the pink of the prawns offer two beautifully contrasting colours. As colours they’re awkward bedfellows that go together so well. Colours that you might not always reach for as a combo but they work.

Muted Edit

With two strong colours the approach and the edit could have been much more intense, saturating both the pink and the green. However, the muted realism works really nicely here, especially with the brown hues of the bread.

Photo Heads can mostly be found photographing in London, sometimes in Bristol and occasionally elsewhere but we do travel throughout the UK and Europe.
