Plain Backdrop Packshot PhotographyJuly 19, 2022
Packshot photography is a functional form of product photography. Just because it has a functional form it can still look good. There are so many approaches to take but in this post we’ll be looking at the well trodden path of plain backdrop packshot photography.
You could choose to photograph your products in a lifestyle setting or a stylised colour background but sometimes you just want the simple white or grey background. And if that’s what you want, then that’s what you should have.
Because this is such a simple form of photography, lighting is crucial. The products need to be well lit but they shouldn’t be flooded with light. A nice soft light will, something that looks as close to daylight will create a nice look and still present the product in all its glory.
A nice grey background rather than white can complement this approach making everything a little easier on the eye. Other elements that you might choose to build into the images could be to add a little grain. Grain will give the images a sense of texture and might just help the whole thing.
Another thing that you could consider, depending on the products your shooting is to have a little bit of drop off. If the focus drops off on the edges of the product rather than the sharp edges this can add another layer of interest for the person viewing the shots. This won’t work for everything because some products will need to be photographed in a very descriptive context to give an accurate representation of what the punters will receive.
