Why Photography Matters For Your Marketing

Have a look at these two pictures and you will see why photography matters for your marketing. Quick disclaimer, I didn’t take either of these pictures.

The quickest and easiest way to describe these images is to say that one is a good image and the other, well the other isn’t.

Two similar products, two ads in my social feed, two very different approaches and they created two very different reactions.

Photography, design and art are all subjective so it’s not for me to actually say that one of these images is better than the other. I like one of these images better than the other (in fact, I like one of these images and I really dislike the other) So again, in my opinion, I think that one of these images is markedly better than the other and says a lot about the companies brand values.

I haven’t taken the time to look into the specification of either of these laptops but the reality is that if I was in the market for a new computer I definitely wouldn’t have clicked on one of these ads. Only one of these ads has the potential to get me excited, or at least interested in the product. In my opinion, the other ad looks ugly and not only does it fail to drive me towards buying the product, it cheapens the brand for me.

And that’s why photography and design matter when it comes to marketing a brand. They have the power to influence, it’s important that it’s a positive influence.

More time has probably been invested into the copy too. My favourite of the two ads has just focussed on all the details.

I’ve always though that no photography is better than crap photography. So if your company is thinking of posting DIY headshots on the website’s ‘about us’ page, forget it just don’t do it. If you’re planning to use a naff picture of a bunch of awkward looking colleagues on the home page carousel, forget it. The problem with ads or product photography is that you’ll need an image of some sort so you have to make sure that it’s a good one.
